Melatonin oral strips: dose math, taste, light, and the 500-box pilot

Melatonin is the most requested active for a sleep strip and one of the easiest to fit. The molecule is small (232 g/mol), the retail dose is 1 to 10 mg, and a finished strip weighs 100 to 300 mg, so the active is a few percent of the film. StripWorks develops and pilots melatonin strips as private-label, white-label or custom projects in San Diego, California.

ANSWER IN BRIEF

Yes. At 1 to 10 mg, melatonin is 1 to 7 percent of a 150 mg film, inside the 5 to 30 percent active range published for orodispersible films. The work is elsewhere: keeping a mildly bitter, light-sensitive molecule evenly dispersed, making it taste like bedtime rather than candy, choosing a package a toddler cannot open, and writing a label counsel will sign. Our standard adult ceiling is 5 mg per strip. A qualified project runs feasibility, sensory rounds and a 500-box pilot before any larger batch.

What fits in a film

Start with the arithmetic, because it settles the melatonin question in one line. Our development strip is 22 by 32 mm, about 7 cm², 50 to 150 µm dry and 100 to 300 mg finished. Melatonin (C13H16N2O2, 232.28 g/mol) at 3 mg is 2 percent of a 150 mg film; at 10 mg it is under 7 percent. Published film work puts the active at 5 to 30 percent of dry weight with the whole film under 200 mg, and a clinical group that cast personalized films for nursing-home patients treated 50 mg of active per film as the practical limit. Melatonin alone never approaches any of those lines. So the decision rule for a sleep brief is about the supporting ingredients, not the melatonin. Add up everything in milligrams. Under about 50 mg total active, one strip. From 50 to 100 mg, one strip is possible but taste and film strength get harder and a two-strip serving belongs on the table. Above 100 mg, split the serving or drop the heavy ingredient. L-theanine at 100 to 200 mg or magnesium at any labeled amount is what tips a sleep blend over; a few milligrams of B6 or a small chamomile extract does not. Two things fight you at any dose. Melatonin dissolves in water at only about 2 g/L at 20 °C, so it is in solution in the wet cast but comes out as the film dries, and the dispersion has to be even across the sheet or edge strips miss label. And it photo-oxidizes at the indole ring, faster in air than under nitrogen, so casting, cutting and pouching happen under low light and the strip lives in foil. Taste is a mild bitterness that a gummy hides behind grams of sugar and a 150 mg strip cannot.

Our standard adult ceiling without further review is 5 mg per strip; 6 to 10 mg goes through a specific safety and regulatory review before we quote. We do not run a child-targeted melatonin program. Certified child-resistant secondary packaging is available and is used wherever law, channel or the customer specification calls for it; a plain foil sachet is not child-resistant. Export projects get a destination-country review before acceptance and are adult-only by default.

Formulation and taste for melatonin strips

Melatonin's XLogP is about 0.8: not oily, not freely water-soluble, which is why it disperses through the polymer as fine solid rather than staying dissolved. Raw-material particle size matters more than most buyers expect; a coarse lot shows up as speckling and as assay spread between strips. Solubility roughly doubles from 20 to 50 °C (2 to 5 g/L), so a warm cast helps wetting but drying then has to be gentle enough not to push the active to the surface. The taste target is different from a daytime product. Nobody wants cooling mint at 10 p.m., so vanilla, chamomile, mild berry or a lavender-adjacent note leads, sweetness stays low, and the build is sugar-free with sucralose, stevia or monk fruit. Sweetener typically runs 3 to 6 percent of the film and flavor up to 10 percent, which leaves plenty of room at a 3 mg dose. Sensory rounds score bitterness, aftertaste length and mouthfeel in the first ten seconds, because that is the whole experience of a bedtime strip.

Dose and format: what one strip should carry

Most briefs land at 3 or 5 mg, with 1 mg for a gentle or first-time product and 10 mg at the top of what retail labels show. We treat those as market conventions, not recommendations. Content accuracy is the quiet issue in this category: a 2023 study cited by NCCIH found 22 of 25 melatonin gummies mislabeled, with actual content from 74 to 347 percent of the label. A film is checked by strip weight and assay across the sheet, which is how a strip product stays out of that data set. Single-active melatonin is the simplest build. For blends, decide which supporting ingredient earns its milligrams: 2 mg of B6 costs nothing, 200 mg of L-theanine roughly doubles a blend's dry mass and pushes the polymer share down. When a brief needs a heavy blend, a two-strip serving or a companion product is cleaner than one crowded film. Nightly products sell on count per month, so the 30-count box is the usual format and 20-count suits trial packs.

Who buys melatonin strips

Sleep is the largest strip category we see. Direct-to-consumer sleep brands want a water-free alternative to gummies; travel and hospitality brands like that a strip packs flat and does not melt; clinics and practitioner lines ask for single-active, low-sugar versions; retail private-label programs usually want a 3 mg and a 5 mg SKU in 30-count boxes.

Packaging and stability for melatonin films

Light and moisture are the two liabilities, and the film polymer is hygroscopic on its own, so opaque foil-laminate sachets are the default and a clear window is a poor idea. The stability plan assays melatonin at pulls through the labeled shelf life (our target is 24 months at 20 to 25 °C) and holds a water-activity specification set for the formula. Then there is the packaging question specific to this molecule. CDC counted 260,435 pediatric melatonin ingestions reported to poison control from 2012 to 2021, a 530 percent rise over the decade, with most exposures in children five and under and two deaths. CRN's 2024 guideline asks members to use child-deterrent packaging on flavored chewable forms. A sweet berry strip in an easy-tear sachet raises the same question a gummy does, and the choice should be made before the carton is quoted.

Regulatory and labeling notes

In the United States melatonin is a dietary supplement; FDA does not approve it before sale and the marketer is responsible for safety and labeling. Claims stay in structure/function territory, carry the FDA disclaimer, and are notified to FDA within 30 days of first marketing. Language about treating insomnia is drug language and is off the label. CRN's guideline, approved March 28, 2024, caps the serving at 10 mg, and asks for statements such as "for occasional and/or intermittent use only" and "for adult use only" plus drowsiness, pregnancy and alcohol notices. Export is a separate project: melatonin is prescription-only in the UK and Australia, and EU member states cap supplement doses between 0.3 and 2 mg per day, so a 5 mg US strip does not travel. StripWorks does not give regulatory advice; counsel reviews the label before pilot.

Private label vs custom for melatonin

Private label is the fast route: a tested single-active film at a standard strength, your flavor from a proven range, your artwork on a 20- or 30-count box. Custom covers blends, unusual strengths, a specific sweetener system or a claim set that needs supporting ingredients, and it adds sensory rounds and a stability commitment for the new formula. Many brands launch private label to prove the channel and go custom on the reorder. Both paths pass through the same feasibility review and the same pilot.

How the 500-box pilot applies

Once formula, flavor and packaging are approved, a qualified melatonin project moves to a 500-box pilot: about 10,000 strips in 20-count boxes or 15,000 in 30-count. The pilot proves the film, the sachet and carton, the batch documentation and the market response before a larger run, and for a sleep product it is where the drowsiness warning, the directions and any child-resistant packaging decision meet real retail requirements.

Common questions

How much melatonin fits in one strip?

Any retail dose. 10 mg is under 7 percent of a 150 mg film, against a published working range of 5 to 30 percent active. Supporting ingredients, not melatonin, are what run a sleep strip out of room.

What is the minimum order for melatonin strips?

A qualified 500-box pilot, about 10,000 strips in 20-count boxes or 15,000 in 30-count. Feasibility and sensory work come first; the pilot is the first commercial run.

Can I get melatonin strip samples before ordering?

Development samples are part of a qualified project, so taste, dissolve time (our target is 30 to 60 seconds) and handling are approved before the pilot.

What melatonin strengths are common?

Retail strips cluster at 3 and 5 mg, with 1 and 10 mg at the ends. CRN's voluntary guideline caps adult products at 10 mg per serving; our standard ceiling without extra review is 5 mg.

Can melatonin strips be sugar-free?

Yes, and most are. Sucralose, stevia or monk fruit at roughly 3 to 6 percent of the film does the job; bedtime products keep sweetness low anyway.

Do melatonin strips need child-resistant packaging?

No federal rule requires it today. CRN's 2024 guideline recommends child-deterrent packaging for flavored chewable melatonin, and CDC counted a 530 percent rise in pediatric ingestions from 2012 to 2021. Decide before packaging is quoted.

Can I sell my melatonin strips in the UK or EU?

Not without a separate formula and label. Melatonin is prescription-only in the UK and Australia, and EU countries cap supplement doses at 0.3 to 2 mg per day.

What is the standard melatonin dose StripWorks will quote?

Up to 5 mg per strip for adult products without additional review. 6 to 10 mg, pediatric positioning and export markets each need a specific safety and regulatory review before a project is accepted.
