Build sleep oral strips around a defined dose, pleasant nighttime flavor, controlled mouthfeel, protective packaging, and a practical pilot run.
What this category is for
A sleep founder's first argument is over the melatonin number. Retail strips sit at 3 mg (Unisom Simple Slumbers, Calmour) and 5 mg (NuStrips Sleep, MaryRuth's), with Wellbeing Nutrition offering 5 and 10 mg. The research cuts the other way: MIT's Wurtman group found about 0.3 mg restores sleep in adults over 50 and that the 3 mg retail dose was less effective and left daytime melatonin elevated. Meanwhile a 2023 analysis cited by NCCIH found products testing at 74 to 347 percent of their labeled melatonin. So the two things a buyer checks are the milligram on the front and whether the brand can prove it. A film helps with the second: melatonin at 1 to 5 mg is a tiny fraction of the strip's mass, and content uniformity across the cast sheet is the quality attribute that matters.
Around the melatonin, the panel fills in with L-theanine (10 mg on NuStrips, 40 mg Suntheanine on MaryRuth's), valerian at 15 to 20 mg, chamomile at 20 mg and B6 at 5 to 6 mg. Theanine tastes faintly savory and mint or berry covers it. Valerian smells like old socks and dominates a film at any real amount; chamomile is milder. Magnesium is the exception: the 310 to 420 mg RDA and 350 mg supplemental limit that capsule buyers know are far beyond a single film, so in a sleep strip magnesium is a supporting mineral at around 25 mg elemental, not a headline. The film should finish clean, without lingering sweetness before brushing.
Actives brands ask about
| Active | Common on labels | In a film | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melatonin | 3 mg (Unisom Simple Slumbers, Calmour) and 5 mg (NuStrips Sleep, MaryRuth's) are the common strengths; Wellbeing Nutrition sells 5 and 10 mg | Fits at any retail strength; 5 mg is our adult ceiling without further review. Uniformity across the sheet, not load, is the spec that matters. No standard child-targeted program. | source |
| L-theanine | 10 mg on NuStrips Sleep; 40 mg Suntheanine on MaryRuth's Sleep strips; up to 100 mg on single-active calm strips | Fits in one strip. Slight umami note; berry and mint cover it. | source |
| Magnesium (glycinate or citrate) | Listed as a supporting mineral on some sleep strips; the adult RDA is 310–420 mg and the supplemental upper limit 350 mg, neither of which a film reaches | About 25 mg elemental per strip is our target; higher loads mean a larger film or a multi-strip serving. | source |
| GABA | Paired with KSM-66 ashwagandha on The Supplement Co Happy Strips (chocolate mocha, 30 count); amounts vary by label | 25 mg per strip is our development target. Fits; mild taste. | source |
| Valerian root or chamomile extract | Valerian 15 mg and chamomile 20 mg on NuStrips and MaryRuth's; EZ Vitamins pairs valerian with 5 mg melatonin, L-theanine and B6 | Chamomile fits with light masking. Valerian's earthy odor dominates a film; keep it small or leave it off. Extract color and moisture need review. | source |
| Vitamin B6 | 5–6 mg on NuStrips, MaryRuth's and EZ Vitamins sleep strips | Fits easily; no taste at label amounts. | source |
Formats that fit
- 30-count box — one strip per night for a month; the subscription cadence and the Amazon default
- Foil sachets inside the carton — melatonin is light-sensitive and a bedside pack gets opened thirty times
- 7- or 10-count travel sleeve — jet-lag positioning for airline, hotel and travel-retail programs
- Practitioner 30-count with a plain, directions-forward label — for clinics dispensing low-dose melatonin
Where these products sell
- DTC sleep and wind-down brands, where melatonin strips are among the most-searched strip products
- Amazon, where strips compete on the milligram and the flavor
- Hotel, airline and travel-amenity programs for jet lag
- Practitioner and sleep-clinic dispensing
- Wellness lines adding a PM SKU beside an AM energy strip
Move into a 500-box pilot.
Once the development and commercial specifications are aligned, a qualified project can move toward a 500-box pilot: roughly 10,000 strips in 20-count boxes or 15,000 strips in 30-count boxes. The pilot validates product, packaging, documentation, and market response before a larger run.
Common questions
Retail sits at 3 mg and 5 mg, with 1 mg and 10 mg at the edges. Our adult ceiling is 5 mg per strip without further review. MIT research put the physiological dose near 0.3 mg, so a low-dose position has published support; the milligram is a brand decision, and any strength in that range is straightforward in a film.
Only in supporting amounts. Our target is about 25 mg elemental per strip against an adult RDA of 310 to 420 mg, so a magnesium-forward product means several strips per serving or a smaller label claim. Feasibility sets the realistic number.
Mint, chamomile-honey, lavender or a soft berry. Melatonin itself has little taste at label amounts; theanine and the botanicals are what the flavor covers, and the film should finish clean so it does not fight bedtime brushing.
Yes. NCCIH reports a 2023 study in which melatonin content ranged from 74 to 347 percent of label, and CDC counted about 11,000 emergency visits for unsupervised melatonin ingestion by children five and under between 2019 and 2022. Expect to carry cautions on drowsiness, driving, pregnancy and children, to verify content by assay, and to check market rules; some countries do not allow melatonin as a supplement. The brand owns claim and market review.
A qualified sleep project can start at the 500-box pilot: about 15,000 strips in 30-count boxes or 10,000 in 20-count. Thirty-count is the usual choice for a nightly product.
