What this category is for
The pitch for a caffeine strip is easy: coffee without the cup, a shot without the can, something that lives in a jeans pocket. The panel is the hard part. Retail strips cluster at 40 mg of caffeine (Revvies, EZStrip), with 50 mg on Hale's Energy + Focus strip and 80 mg per serving on ODiSTRYPE. Shoppers who buy them already know a 12 oz brewed coffee runs 113 to 247 mg by FDA's own figures, so the credible position is a small dose that can be stacked, and the directions have to say where stacking stops. FDA cites 400 mg a day as the amount not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults; at 40 mg a strip that is ten strips, and most labels cap far lower.
Inside the film, energy is a small-mass, high-bitterness problem. Caffeine anhydrous at 40 to 80 mg sits within one 22 × 32 mm strip's active budget, but caffeine is among the most bitter actives a film carries, so the sweetener, cooling agent and mint or citrus flavor system do most of the development work. B12 as methylcobalamin is a microgram active. A 1,000 mcg label looks large next to the 2.4 mcg adult RDA, but only about 1 to 2 percent of a large oral dose is absorbed passively, which is why retail labels run that high. It also stains the film a deep pink and adds a faint metallic note. Green-tea and guarana extracts bring color, astringency and moisture that trade against film strength.
